Body Language

Body language is defined as a form of mental and physical ability of human non-verbal communication, which consists of body posture, gestures, facial expressions, and eye movements. Humans send and interpret such signals almost entirely subconsciously [wikipedia]. It is very important when doing a presentation or while communicating in general.

Dr. Albert Mehrabian, a Professor of Psychology at UCLA, did a study in 1967 and found the 55%, 38%, 7% rule. This rule states that:

  • 55% of communication is visual (your body language)
  • 38% of communication is your voice (tone, inflection, etc)
  • 7% is verbal (your words)

Although that this 55%, 38%, 7% rule is a myth, however it supports the the point of view that body language and tone are important during presentations and communications. This puts emphasis on the impoortance of body language and that presenters and communicators should make sure to develop their body language skills in order to be successful presenters and effective communicators.
