Why Using Bell Curve in Performance Evaluation is Bad for Your Organization

Why Using Bell Curve in Performance Evaluation is Bad for Your Organization

It is end of February 2016 and almost all organizations have finished the whole process of performance evaluation of their employees for 2015. This process is usually done at the last quarter of the year. In addition and in the case of organizations that use bell curve model for evaluation, of course there will be few employees on both left and right sides of the curve which represent the best performance and bad performance and the majority of employees will be somewhere in the middle which represents the good or average performance. From my point of view, such kind of evaluation will not lead to the results that organizations are looking for especially improving employees performance in the next year. Doing the evaluation at the last quarter of the year and using bell curve model will not reflect actual performance of the employees throughout the year. As a result, many employees will be disappointed, some might think seriously to resign and the performance in general will be affected in the next year. That is why organizations should consider continuous evaluation throughout the year which will be much better and lead to the expected results.

All the best…

Thank you Anwar for sharing your thoughts on Bell Curve. I believe it is being used due to the dominating believe that people performance follows the normal distribution. Research shows that it does not! I came across a nice article about this exact topic titled "The myth of Bell Curve" by Josh Bersin.
